Production at the Woolmill - Plying and Hanking

After spinning, multiples of the single yarn can be plied together to form a two, three, four-fold yarn.

The amount of twist can vary according to the end use of the yarn. For example, our Knitting yarn is twisted with 2-3 turns per inch to create a more voluminous, soft handling yarn.

These twisted yarns are then wound into measured hanks suitable for hand knitters or hank dyeing.

Over the last few months we have been experimenting with different natural, traditional dyes to colour our hanks by hand. Dye baths were made up in our Outdoor Classroom at the Mill using weld, log wood, madder root and woad.
