Knockando Woolmill - A Community Hub

KNOCKANDO WOOLMILL: A COMMUNITY HUB

Since 1784, Knockando Woolmill has been a cornerstone of North-East Scotland’s community. Local folk brought in their sheep’s wool which was spun and woven into products used by the community. This put William and Ann Grant, the first recorded tenants of the mill and its croft, at the heart of the working community.

Poverty and limited job opportunities drove many of their neighbours to leave their homes in search of work in towns and cities, often even overseas. The Grant family was a valuable and hardworking tenant of the croft and the Mill and they provided important local employment.

ADAPT AND THRIVE

By the 1820s, a new generation of the Grant family had expanded their cottage industry. The Woolmill and its croft provided enough income the family to live comfortably and run their business. Despite the challenges of living in such a remote location with limited transportation, the Grant family managed to thrive.
